What Uses the Most Electricity in a Home?

Heating, cooling, hot water, EV charging and pool pumps account for most of a household's electricity. Nearly all popular saving advice targets the loads that account for almost none of it. Here is the ranking, with the arithmetic.

Watts Are Not the Answer. Kilowatt-Hours Are.

Almost every wrong intuition about home electricity comes from confusing two quantities. A watt is a rate — how fast a device consumes electricity while running. A kilowatt-hour is a quantity — a thousand watts drawn for one hour, and the unit your utility actually bills you for. The bridge between them is time, and time is what people leave out. Your bill is not a list of the most powerful things you own; it is the sum of power multiplied by hours, appliance by appliance, over the month.

Two comparisons show how far that gap opens:

  • A WiFi router draws about 8 watts. A vacuum cleaner draws about 1,100 watts — nearly 140 times as much. Over a month the router uses 5.8 kWh and the vacuum uses 5.0 kWh. The router wins, because it never stops and the vacuum runs about nine minutes a day.
  • A tankless electric water heater can pull 24,000 watts, the largest instantaneous draw in most houses by a wide margin. It also runs about eighteen minutes a day, putting it at roughly 219 kWh a month — less than a central air conditioner that draws a seventh as much power but runs twenty times as long.

The practical rule follows: the loads that matter combine substantial power with substantial run time. That is a short list, and not the list most saving advice talks about. All figures below use effective running hours — duty-cycle time, not time plugged in — which is the honest basis and the one most consumer calculators get wrong.

The Top Tier: Heating, Cooling, Hot Water, EVs and Pools

These loads dominate, and it is not close. Every one of them either moves heat, makes heat, or moves water — and thermal work is simply expensive in a way that running electronics is not.

In a month when it is actually running, central air conditioning alone consumes about 638 kWh — roughly three-quarters of what the entire average US household uses in a month, which is 863 kWh. That is not a line item on the bill. It is a second bill.

Seasonal loads are quoted at in-season hours. Annualise them by the number of months the appliance actually operates, not by twelve — a window air conditioner running four months a year is a different proposition from one running nine.

Two of these are routinely overlooked. A Level 2 EV charger at about 219 kWh a month adds roughly a quarter to the average household's consumption — people notice the bill change and blame everything except the car. A pool pump at 205 kWh a month is a top-five household load most owners never think about, because it is outdoors, quiet, and nobody ever chose to turn it on.

The Middle Tier: Refrigeration, Laundry and Cooking

Below the thermal loads sits a group worth knowing about but an order of magnitude smaller. These are the appliances people picture when they think about electricity use, and they are largely not where the money is.

  • Electric clothes dryer — about 55 kWh a month, roughly $10. The heaviest of the middle tier and the most responsive to behaviour: the dryer is making heat, so every load you keep out of it is a real saving.
  • Refrigerator — about 37 kWh a month, roughly $7. Modest for a device that never turns off, because the compressor cycles. What matters is not the setting on the dial but whether the condenser can reject heat: coils choked with dust or a unit shoved flush against a wall force longer compressor cycles to reach the same temperature, and no thermostat adjustment fixes that. A second refrigerator in a hot garage is often the largest unexamined load in a house.
  • Chest or upright freezer — about 34 kWh a month, roughly $6. Same physics, same maintenance point.
  • Electric oven or range — about 24 kWh a month, roughly $4. High power, about twenty minutes of use a day. This is why swapping the oven for a countertop appliance on small jobs is real but small: an air fryer and a toaster oven each run about 9 kWh a month, so the change saves single-digit dollars, not a bill.
  • Dishwasher — about 11 kWh a month, roughly $2. That counts only the machine's own electricity. If your water heater is electric, the hot water it draws is billed under the water heater — the fourth-largest load in the table above.
  • Clothes washer — about 6 kWh a month, roughly $1. The same caveat applies, and it is the whole reason washing in cold water is worthwhile: the saving is in the water heating, not in the machine.

The pattern across this tier is that an appliance's own electricity is often the smaller half of what it costs you. Anything that consumes hot water is partly a water-heating load wearing a disguise.

The Bottom Tier — and Where Most Advice Is Aimed

Here is the uncomfortable part. The loads below are where the overwhelming majority of popular energy-saving advice is directed, and they collectively account for a trivial share of a typical bill.

  • Desktop computer, six hours a day: 27 kWh a month, about $5.05
  • Ceiling fan, six hours a day: 14 kWh, about $2.53
  • Gaming console, two hours a day: 10 kWh, about $1.79
  • LED television, five hours a day: 9 kWh, about $1.68
  • Laptop, six hours a day: 9 kWh, about $1.68
  • Microwave: 8 kWh, about $1.55
  • WiFi router, continuous: 6 kWh, about $1.07
  • One incandescent bulb, three hours a day: 5.5 kWh, about $1.01
  • One LED bulb, three hours a day: 0.8 kWh, about $0.15
  • Phone charger, three hours a day: 0.5 kWh, about $0.09

Turn off every light in the house, unplug every charger and switch the television off at the wall each night, and you will have addressed a few dollars a month. Meanwhile the air conditioner is spending over a hundred.

This is worth saying plainly, because the advice is not merely ineffective. It consumes the attention — and the sense of having done something — that would otherwise go to the changes that work. A household that diligently unplugs chargers is less likely to look at its thermostat schedule, its water heater temperature, or the second refrigerator in the garage.

Lighting deserves one qualification, because it has the best case of anything in this tier. Swapping a single incandescent bulb used three hours a day for an LED saves about 4.7 kWh a month, roughly 87 cents — negligible alone. Across every fixture in a house it becomes a real and permanent reduction, and the bulbs last years. It is worth doing. It is not worth doing first, and it will not rescue a bill that heating or cooling is driving.

Standby Draw: Real, Measurable and Small

“Vampire” or “phantom” load — the electricity devices consume while switched off or idle — is real. It is also routinely presented as a major share of a household bill, which it is not, and the device people are told to unplug is usually the wrong one.

Adding up the standby figures for the electronics and kitchen appliances in our appliance dataset gives roughly 35 watts of continuous draw for a typical set of devices. Left alone for a month that is about 26 kWh, or a little under $5 at the national average rate of 18.44 cents per kilowatt-hour — around 3% of the 863 kWh an average US household uses.

What is worth knowing is the distribution, because it is extremely uneven:

  • A phone charger left plugged in with no phone attached draws about 0.2 watts. Unplugging it saves pennies a year. This is the single most repeated piece of energy advice in circulation and it is worth essentially nothing.
  • A gaming console can draw around 12 watts in standby — sixty times the charger — largely to support instant-on and background downloads. Turning that setting off is the highest-value standby change in most homes.
  • A hot tub idles at roughly 50 watts even when nobody is in it, on top of its running consumption — the largest standby figure in the dataset.
  • A WiFi router draws about 8 watts around the clock, which is its running state rather than standby. Nobody is going to unplug it, and nobody should.

The sensible response is proportionate: switch off instant-on for consoles, put a genuinely unused entertainment cluster on one switched power strip, and stop worrying about chargers.

Where to Actually Put Your Attention

If you take one thing from the ranking, take this: a household's electricity bill is decided by a handful of thermal loads, and everything else is rounding.

In rough order of expected return:

  1. Heating and cooling, before anything else. This tops the list in nearly every home with electric heat or air conditioning. The levers are the thermostat schedule (a genuine setback while the house is empty), the filter, the ductwork and the building envelope. Nothing else is capable of moving the bill by a comparable amount.
  2. Water heating. The second thermal load, hiding inside your laundry and dishwashing figures as well as your showers. Temperature setting, shower length and washing in cold water all act on it.
  3. The loads you forgot you had. Pool pumps, hot tubs, dehumidifiers, well pumps and second refrigerators are the classic cases — large, continuous, out of sight, never consciously switched on. Walk the house and the yard and count them.
  4. EV charging, if it applies. Roughly a quarter added to average household consumption, and one of the few large loads whose timing is completely flexible. On a time-of-use rate, moving charging to the off-peak window is among the highest-value changes available.
  5. Only then, the small stuff. Lighting, standby and appliance habits — worth doing, permanently beneficial, and no substitute for the four above.

What single appliance uses the most electricity in a house?

Central air conditioning, in a month when it runs. At a typical 3,500 running watts and about six effective hours a day it comes to roughly 638 kWh a month — close to three-quarters of the 863 kWh an average US household uses in total. Electric heating is second at about 532 kWh, and in cold climates it takes the top spot in winter. Both are far ahead of everything else. If your house has neither electric heat nor air conditioning, the largest load is usually the electric water heater at around 233 kWh a month.

Do chargers left plugged in really waste electricity?

Technically yes, and the amount is close to nothing. A phone charger left in the wall with no phone attached draws roughly 0.2 watts, which works out to a few cents a year. Unplugging chargers is the most repeated piece of energy advice in circulation and among the least useful. Standby draw across a whole household's electronics and kitchen appliances totals around 35 watts, or about 26 kWh a month — real, but roughly 3% of a typical bill. If you want to act on standby, disable instant-on for gaming consoles, which can idle at around 12 watts.

Is it worth switching to LED bulbs?

Yes, but understand the scale. One incandescent bulb used three hours a day consumes about 5.5 kWh a month; the LED equivalent uses about 0.8 kWh. That is a saving of roughly 87 cents a month per bulb at the national average rate. Across every fixture in a house the total becomes meaningful, the bulbs last for years, and the change is permanent and requires no ongoing behaviour — all of which makes it worth doing. What it will not do is fix a high bill driven by heating, cooling or water heating, which operate at fifty to a hundred times the scale.

Why is my bill high when I barely use anything?

Because the largest loads in a home are not things you consciously operate. Air conditioning, electric heat, water heating, pool pumps, dehumidifiers and second refrigerators all run on their own, driven by weather and thermostats rather than by anyone flipping a switch. A household can be scrupulous about lights and electronics — loads worth a few dollars a month — while the thermal loads spend well over a hundred. The other common answer is that nothing in your house changed at all: rates move, and the US residential price rose 6.2% between May 2025 and May 2026.

Is a space heater cheaper than running the central heating?

It depends entirely on whether you are replacing the central system or supplementing it. Heating one occupied room with a portable heater while genuinely turning the whole-house system down can reduce consumption; running a space heater in addition to normal central heat only adds — about 228 kWh a month at five hours a day, roughly $42. Be sceptical of “efficient” portable heater marketing: every resistance heater converts electricity to heat at essentially the same rate, so a $300 model produces no more warmth per kilowatt-hour than a $30 one. Heat pumps are the genuine exception, because they move heat rather than create it.
