What an air fryer actually draws

An air fryer is a small convection oven with an aggressive fan, and its electrical behaviour follows from that. Nameplate ratings — the peak wattage printed on the data plate or in the manual — run from 800 W for a two-quart basket to 1,800 W for a large multi-shelf model, with 1,500 W the common middle. That nameplate figure is real, but it is peak draw, not average draw. The element pulls full power only while the cavity is climbing to temperature. Once it arrives, the thermostat starts cycling the element on and off to hold the setpoint, and the fan — a few tens of watts — is all that runs continuously. The share of running time the element is actually energised is the appliance's duty cycle, and for a small, well-insulated cavity it drops quickly once the food is in.

The second thing that separates air fryers from ovens is time. Forced convection strips heat off food far faster than still air, cutting cook times by 20 to 40%, and the cavity is small enough to preheat in two to three minutes rather than fifteen. Add up a household's actual sessions and typical daily runtime lands near 12 minutes — 0.2 hours. Between sessions the control board draws about 1 W.

What that costs, worked through

The arithmetic is the same for every appliance on this site. Watts multiplied by hours of genuine running, divided by 1,000, gives kilowatt-hours per day. Multiply by 30.4 — the average length of a month — for a monthly figure, then multiply by your price per kWh.

For an air fryer at 1,500 W running 0.2 hours: 1,500 × 0.2 = 300 watt-hours, divided by 1,000 is 0.3 kWh per day. Times 30.4 gives 9.1 kWh per month. At the US average residential rate of 18.44 cents per kWh, that is 9.1 × $0.1844 = about $1.68 a month, or roughly $20 a year. Per session it is under six cents.

Run the ends of the range the same way. An 800 W compact model at the same 12 minutes a day uses 0.16 kWh daily, 4.9 kWh a month, about $0.90. An 1,800 W large model uses 0.36 kWh daily, 10.9 kWh a month, about $2.02. So the entire plausible spread across air fryers is roughly a dollar a month.

Standby matters more than usual here, precisely because running use is so small. One watt left on the clock and control board around the clock is 0.73 kWh a month, about 13 cents — roughly 8% of what the cooking costs. What makes one air fryer cost more than another

Nothing about air fryer energy use is mysterious, but the drivers are not the ones people expect. Wattage barely matters, because a higher-wattage unit reaches temperature sooner and then cycles off sooner. What matters is total minutes with the element energised.

  • Cavity size. A ten-quart basket or a two-shelf oven-style model has more air and more metal to heat, and more surface losing that heat to the kitchen. It draws more and it holds the element on longer.
  • Batching. Two half-full baskets pay the heat-up cost twice. This is the single largest avoidable difference between two households with identical machines.
  • Food mass and moisture. A tray of frozen fries pulls far more energy out of the cavity than a handful of reheated leftovers, so the element cycles more.
  • Setpoint. Cooking at 400°F holds the element on a greater share of the time than cooking at 325°F, though the higher setting usually finishes faster and partly cancels itself out.
  • Frequency. A household that air-fries twice a day simply doubles the figure. Frequency swamps every technical variable.

Age and efficiency standards, which dominate the arithmetic for refrigerators and air conditioners, are almost irrelevant here. There is no federal efficiency standard for air fryers, and a resistance element from 2015 converts electricity into heat exactly as well as one from this year. A ten-year-old air fryer is not costing you money; it is doing the same job with a scruffier basket.

Whether it is worth doing anything about

Two habits genuinely reduce the number, and both are about avoiding wasted heat-up cycles.

Skip the separate preheat for most foods. The convection fan brings the cavity to working temperature within the first two minutes of cooking anyway, so a dedicated preheat step is close to pure waste — you are running the element to heat empty air, then opening the basket and letting it out. And cook in one full basket rather than two half batches, because each batch pays the heat-up cost again. Between them these might cut the figure by a quarter.

A quarter of $1.68 is 42 cents a month. That is the honest scale. If you are looking for something to change about your electricity bill, the air fryer is not it, and anyone presenting air fryer technique as a savings strategy is padding an article. Use the full-basket habit because it cooks better — crowded baskets steam, split batches dry out the first half — and take the pennies as a bonus.

The real energy argument for an air fryer is displacement, and it is not small. A full-size electric oven draws around 2,400 W and typically runs 45 minutes including preheat for a tray of something, which is about 1.8 kWh. The same tray in an air fryer at 1,500 W for 20 minutes is 0.5 kWh. That is roughly a quarter of a kilowatt-hour saved per meal, and in summer you also avoid dumping the oven's heat into a room your air conditioner then has to cool back down.

How it compares with everything else you plug in

At 9.1 kWh a month, an air fryer sits in the middle of the small-kitchen-appliance pack and nowhere near the loads that shape a bill. A microwave is about 8.4 kWh a month, a toaster oven about 9.3 kWh, a dishwasher about 10.9 kWh, a coffee maker about 7.6 kWh. All of them are rounding errors next to the refrigerator's 36.5 kWh, and the refrigerator is itself a minority share of most bills.

Set it against the heating and cooling loads and the comparison stops being close. A central air conditioner runs about 638 kWh in a summer month — seventy times the air fryer. A single 1,500 W space heater at five hours a day is about 228 kWh, twenty-five times. An electric clothes dryer is about 54.7 kWh, six times. The air fryer and the space heater have the same nameplate wattage; the space heater costs twenty-five times as much to run, purely because of hours.
