How Much Electricity Does a Clothes Washer Use?

The washing machine is one of the smallest electrical loads in the house. If you wash warm or hot, most of the cost of laundry appears on your water heater's line of the bill, not here.

What a clothes washer actually draws

A clothes washer draws about 500 W, with typical machines falling between 350 W and 500 W. That figure covers the motor turning the drum, the control board, the pump moving water out, and the high-speed spin at the end of the cycle. It does not include heating water, and that omission is the single most important fact on this page.

The machine runs about 50 to 60 minutes per load, and a typical household runs about five loads a week, which averages to roughly 0.4 hours a day. Within a cycle the draw is uneven: the spin is the peak, the wash agitation is moderate, and the fill and soak periods are close to nothing.

Here is where most published laundry figures mislead. If you select a warm or hot wash, your washer opens the hot tap and pulls heated water from the water heater. That energy is real and it is large, but it is metered at the water heater, on its own gas or electric line of the bill, not at the washer's outlet. A wattage figure for the washing machine therefore describes a fraction of what a warm wash actually costs, and any comparison between washers that ignores water temperature is comparing the wrong thing.

This is why EIA's 2020 Residential Energy Consumption Survey shows just 69 kWh a year for clothes washers — one of the smallest end uses in the entire survey — while people's sense of what laundry costs is far higher. The perception is not wrong. It is just filed under the wrong appliance.

What that costs, worked through

Watts × hours ÷ 1,000 = kWh per day. For the washer: 500 W × 0.4 hours = 200 watt-hours, which is 0.2 kWh a day. Over 30.4 days that is 6.1 kWh a month. At the US average residential rate of 18.44 cents per kWh, 6.1 × $0.1844 = about $1.12 a month. For the year, roughly 73 kWh and $13.46 — within a few percent of EIA's measured 69 kWh, which is reassuring.

Per load, five loads a week works out to about 0.28 kWh, or roughly five cents of electricity for the machine itself. At the low end of the range, a 350 W machine gives 0.14 kWh a day, 4.3 kWh a month, about 78 cents.

Two things put that in perspective. First, the washer has a standby draw of about 1 W for its control board and display. At 24 hours a day that is 0.73 kWh a month, roughly 13 cents — which is about 12 percent of what the machine costs while actually washing. Very few appliances have a standby load that large relative to their working load, and it is only true here because the working load is so small.

Second, and much more consequential: a warm wash's water heating is not in any of these numbers. Depending on your water heater's fuel and your incoming water temperature, that heating typically dwarfs the 5 cents of motor electricity many times over, and it is the number that decides what laundry really costs you.

What makes the number move

The electrical figure for a washer is stable and small, and the things that move it are modest:

  • Load count. Linear, and the biggest single factor. Twice the loads, twice the electricity.
  • Machine type. Front-loaders spin faster and use less water than traditional top-loaders, so they draw more during spin but for less total time, and they leave clothes drier.
  • Cycle selection. Heavy-duty and sanitise cycles run longer and agitate more; a quick wash is a fraction of the time.
  • Spin speed. Higher speeds cost slightly more at the washer and save considerably more at the dryer, which is a trade worth making every time.

What moves the real cost of laundry is water temperature, and it does not move this number at all. Roughly 75 to 90 percent of a warm-wash load's total energy goes into heating the water. That share is not measured at the washer, but it is the number that decides your laundry bill.

Water use is the other hidden variable. A high-efficiency machine using substantially less water per load lowers both the water bill and, if you wash warm, the water heating load behind it. Whether it is worth doing anything about

There is exactly one change worth making, and it is not about the washer's electricity.

Wash cold. Since roughly 75 to 90 percent of a warm-wash load's total energy is heating the water, switching to cold does not trim that cost, it eliminates it. Modern detergents are formulated with enzymes that work at tap temperature, and for ordinary household laundry — clothes worn once, not oil-stained work gear or bedding from a sick household — cold water cleans acceptably. This is one of the few widely repeated energy tips that survives scrutiny, and it survives precisely because the saving comes from a large load, the water heater, rather than a small one.

Now the honest part about everything else. At $1.12 a month for the machine itself, no adjustment you make to the washer's own electricity will show up on a bill. Choosing a shorter cycle saves a fraction of a cent. Unplugging it to kill the 1 W standby saves about $1.62 a year, which is real but is not a reason to crawl behind the machine. Replacing a functioning washer with a more efficient one to save on motor electricity cannot pay back at these numbers — replace it for water use, spin performance or because it broke.

Where your attention genuinely belongs is next door. The dryer uses roughly nine times the electricity of the washer, and the water heater takes the lion's share of a warm wash. Optimising the washer itself is time spent on the smallest term in the equation.

How it compares with everything else you plug in

A clothes washer is one of the smallest regularly used loads in a home. At 6.1 kWh a month, it uses about one-sixth of what a refrigerator uses, about one-ninth of what an electric dryer uses, and a little over half of what a dishwasher uses at 10.9 kWh. Its annual figure of roughly 73 kWh is one of the smallest line items in EIA's entire residential survey.

Two useful reference points. A single load of laundry costs about five cents to wash and about 46 cents to dry — so the dryer is roughly nine-tenths of the electricity in a load of laundry, before you count any water heating. And the washer's month of running, 6.1 kWh, is less than a refrigerator uses in six days.

Against a whole bill, this is a rounding error. Take the total kWh on your statement and divide 6.1 into it: in most homes the washer is well under 1 percent. That is not an argument for wasting energy, it is an argument for spending your attention where the kilowatt-hours actually are — heating, cooling, water heating and the dryer.

Is it cheaper to run a clothes washer at night?

On a flat rate, no. On a time-of-use rate it is technically cheaper, but the amount is trivial — shifting five cents a load out of peak pricing saves a few cents a month even on a plan with a wide peak-to-off-peak spread. The reason to do laundry off-peak is the dryer that follows, which uses roughly nine times as much electricity and is genuinely worth shifting.
