How Much Electricity Does a Dishwasher Use?

A dishwasher cycle runs two hours on the clock but only draws real power for 30 to 45 minutes of it. Published annual figures differ threefold depending on whether they include heating the incoming water.

What a dishwasher actually draws

A dishwasher is rated around 1,200 W, with the range across machines running from 1,000 W to 2,400 W. Almost all of that is a heating element. The pump that sprays water and the motor that drives it are small loads; the element that raises wash water to temperature and then dries the dishes is what makes the number large.

The important thing is that the element does not run for the length of the cycle. A modern dishwasher takes 90 minutes to two and a half hours on the clock, and for most of that it is circulating water, soaking, or draining — drawing a few hundred watts at most. Full power happens in two bursts: heating the wash water at the start, and heated drying at the end. Across a typical cycle that is roughly 30 to 45 minutes of real draw.

Long cycle times on new machines are a consequence of efficiency standards, not a sign of waste. Given less water and less heat to work with, the machine compensates with time: longer soaks, longer circulation, lower temperatures. A two-hour eco cycle usually uses less energy than a one-hour normal cycle on the same machine, which is counterintuitive until you notice the element is off for most of those two hours.

A typical household runs about four loads a week, which averages to roughly 0.3 hours a day of effective full-power running. There is also a standby draw of about 1 W for the control panel and door latch sensing.

What that costs, worked through

Watts × hours ÷ 1,000 = kWh per day. For a dishwasher: 1,200 W × 0.3 hours = 360 watt-hours, which is 0.36 kWh a day. Over a 30.4-day month that is 10.9 kWh. At the US average residential rate of 18.44 cents per kWh, 10.9 × $0.1844 = about $2.02 a month, or roughly $24 a year.

Per load, four loads a week works out to about 0.63 kWh, or roughly 12 cents of electricity for the machine. At the ends of the range: a 1,000 W machine gives 9.1 kWh a month and about $1.68, while a 2,400 W machine gives 21.9 kWh and about $4.04.

Standby is worth a line of its own. One watt around the clock is 0.73 kWh a month, about 13 cents, or roughly $1.62 a year. That is about 6 percent of what the dishwasher costs to run, which is unremarkable in absolute terms but shows how standby draw grows in significance as an appliance's working load shrinks.

Now the part that explains why every source you find gives a different number. EIA's 2020 Residential Energy Consumption Survey measured 112 kWh a year for dishwashers, about $21. The federal efficiency standard is written around 307 kWh a year, and ENERGY STAR describes a dishwasher as costing about $50 a year to run. Those are not contradictions. The larger figures include the energy to heat the incoming water; the smaller one does not.

Why the published figures disagree, and what else moves the number

The three-to-one gap between 112 kWh and 307 kWh a year deserves a proper explanation, because it is the single reason dishwasher cost estimates are unreliable.

A dishwasher can get hot water two ways. It can draw already-heated water from your home's water heater, or it can take cold water and heat it internally with its own element, or some combination. When a standard or a certification programme quotes an annual figure, it generally includes the water heating regardless of where it happens, because that is the honest total cost of washing dishes. When a metering survey records what the dishwasher's own circuit consumed, it captures only what the machine drew — the water heating appears on the water heater's line of your bill instead.

The 10.9 kWh a month used here is the machine-only basis, matching the metered figure. If your dishwasher connects to hot water, add water heating on top; if it connects to cold, the heating is inside these numbers already but the cycle will run longer.

Beyond that, what moves the total:

  • Cycle choice. Heavy or pots-and-pans cycles raise water temperature and add wash phases. Eco cycles trade time for energy and win.
  • Heated dry. A straight electric resistance element, typically 15 to 50 percent of the cycle's own electricity.
  • Sanitise and extra-hot options. Each raises the target temperature, and heating water is where the energy is.
  • Load count and fullness. A half-empty dishwasher costs the same as a full one.

Whether it is worth doing anything about

Two changes actually matter, and one common belief is backwards.

Turn off heated dry and crack the door open at the end of the cycle. The drying element is straight electric resistance — it makes heat at exactly one unit of heat per unit of electricity, with no cleverness available — and it typically accounts for 15 to 50 percent of the cycle's own electricity. Air drying costs nothing and takes an extra half hour you are usually asleep for. On a $2.02 monthly cost this is worth something like 30 cents to $1 a month, which is a large proportional saving on a small number.

Stop pre-rinsing at the sink. Running the tap to scrub plates before loading uses more hot water than the dishwasher consumes across the entire cycle, and modern detergents rely on food residue to work against. Scrape, do not rinse. This is one of the rare cases where the wasteful habit is invisible because it happens at the sink and lands on the water heating bill.

The belief that is backwards: that hand washing is cheaper. A full modern dishwasher uses less hot water than washing the same load by hand under a running tap, and hot water is where the cost lives.

What is not worth your attention: cycle-by-cycle micromanagement, or replacing a working dishwasher to save electricity. At roughly $24 a year for the machine, there is no payback story there. How it compares with everything else you plug in

At 10.9 kWh a month, a dishwasher is a modest load. It uses less than a third of what a refrigerator uses at 36.5 kWh, about a fifth of what an electric clothes dryer uses at 54.7 kWh, and a little under half of what an electric oven and cooktop use at 24.1 kWh. It uses roughly 30 percent more than a microwave and about the same as a toaster oven.

Put another way: one dishwasher load costs about 12 cents of electricity. One dryer load costs about 46 cents. A refrigerator quietly spends the dishwasher's entire monthly electricity in about nine days.

The proportional check is worth doing. Divide 10.9 into the total kWh on your bill; in most homes the dishwasher is around 1 to 2 percent of usage. That means even eliminating it entirely — washing everything by hand forever — would not visibly change your bill, and would probably increase your water heating.

The caveat, as always with dishwashers, is that this figure describes the machine and not the hot water. If your dishwasher is plumbed to hot and you have an electric water heater, the true cost of running it is meaningfully higher than $2.02 a month and lives on a different line of the bill.
