Nameplate is not the number here. A console's power supply is rated for a worst case it rarely meets, so the label overstates typical play. Measured draw also moves with what is on screen: a menu, a 2D indie title or a paused game pulls a fraction of what a ray-traced open world at 120 frames per second pulls, and the fans spinning up is the audible version of that.
The figure that surprises people is not gameplay at all. It is standby. Sony's Rest Mode and Microsoft's Instant-On hold the console in a warm state so it resumes instantly and downloads updates overnight, and that costs 10 to 15 W continuously, all day, every day, whether or not anyone plays. Call it 12 W.
For someone playing two hours a day, the idle energy roughly matches or exceeds the playing energy. That is a genuinely unusual property. Almost no other appliance in a house spends more on doing nothing than on doing its job.
What that costs, worked through
Watts multiplied by hours of actual running, divided by 1,000, gives kilowatt-hours per day.
Gameplay first. At 160 W over 2 hours: 160 × 2 = 320 watt-hours, divided by 1,000 is 0.32 kWh per day. Multiplied by 30.4 days, that is 9.7 kWh per month, which at 18.44 cents per kWh is about $1.79 a month, or roughly $22 a year.
Now standby. At 12 W across the other 22 hours: 12 × 22 = 264 watt-hours, or 0.264 kWh per day, which is 8.03 kWh a month, about $1.48. Held around the clock across a full year, 12 W is about 105 kWh, roughly $19 at the average rate. The two lines together come to about $3.27 a month, and nearly half of that bought nothing.
The ends of the range: a docked Switch or a low-draw session at 45 W over two hours is 2.74 kWh a month, about 50 cents. A demanding title at 220 W is 13.4 kWh a month, about $2.47. A heavy player at 200 W for six hours a day reaches 36.5 kWh a month, about $6.73, which is a refrigerator. What makes it vary
The drivers, in the order they matter.
- Standby setting. Rest Mode or Instant-On against full shutdown is the difference between roughly 105 kWh a year of idle draw and almost none. Nothing else on this list is close.
- Generation. A current console at 150 to 200 W, a docked Switch at 10 to 18 W, and a PS3 or Xbox 360 era unit at 215 to 400 W are three different appliances.
- What you are doing on it. Gaming is the expensive mode. Streaming video through a console draws far more than the same stream through the television's built-in app, and it produces an identical picture.

It is the rare efficiency tip where the saving is the larger share of the appliance's total consumption rather than a rounding error on it.
There is a genuine trade to weigh, and it should be stated plainly. Rest Mode exists so that games download and install overnight, so that the console resumes exactly where you left it, and on some systems so that remote play works. If you use those, the $17 to $24 a year is what they cost. That is a reasonable price for a feature you actually use, and a poor one for a feature you do not.
The second change: stream video through the television's own app rather than through the console. A console decoding a film is running a machine built for real-time 3D rendering to do a job a $30 stick does at a few watts. The picture is the same.
