What a pool pump actually draws
This is the widest-swinging real-world number of any household appliance, and the swing is not noise. It is two entirely different machines sold under the same name.
A legacy single-speed 1.5 HP pump draws 1,500 to 2,000 W and, run the customary eight hours a day, exceeds 4,000 kWh a year on its own, which is larger than most homes' air conditioning. A variable-speed pump running on low RPM draws 150 to 400 W and achieves the same daily turnover of the pool's water. Same pool, same clarity, roughly a quarter of the energy or better.
The reason is a property of centrifugal pumps called the affinity laws: flow falls in proportion to speed, but power falls with the cube of speed. Halve the RPM and you get half the flow for one-eighth the power. Since what a pool needs is a total volume turned over each day rather than a particular flow rate at any moment, this is close to free money, and it is why the Department of Energy has required variable-speed capability on most new residential pool pumps since July 2021.
The figure used on this page, 1,500 W over 4.5 hours a day, is calibrated to the 2020 Residential Energy Consumption Survey's measured 2,384 kWh a year for households that have a pool pump. That survey number reflects a real installed mix of both pump types, which is why it sits well below what a single-speed pump alone would produce and well above a modern variable-speed unit.
What that costs, worked through
Watts multiplied by hours of actual running, divided by 1,000, gives kilowatt-hours per day.
At the blended 1,500 W over 4.5 hours: 1,500 × 4.5 = 6,750 watt-hours, divided by 1,000 is 6.75 kWh per day. Multiplied by 30.4 days, that is 205.2 kWh per month. At 18.44 cents per kWh, 205.2 × $0.1844 is about $37.84 a month. Against the survey's measured 2,384 kWh a year, the annual figure is about $440.
Now split the two machines, because the blend hides the decision. A single-speed pump at 1,500 W run the traditional eight hours is 12 kWh a day, 364.8 kWh a month, about $67.27. At 2,000 W it is 16 kWh a day, 486.4 kWh a month, about $89.69. A variable-speed pump at 250 W run nine hours is 2.25 kWh a day, 68.4 kWh a month, about $12.61. At the 150 W bottom end it is 41 kWh a month, about $7.57; at 400 W, 109.4 kWh a month, about $20.18.
So the plausible spread for keeping one pool clean runs from roughly $8 to $90 a month, an eleven-fold difference driven almost entirely by which pump is bolted to the pad. What makes it vary
Naming the drivers in order of size, because the order is not what most pool owners assume.
- Pump type and speed. Single-speed versus variable-speed, and on a variable-speed pump the RPM you choose. Because of the cube relationship, this dwarfs everything below it.
- Hours run. Linear, unlike speed. Doubling hours doubles energy; halving speed cuts it to an eighth. That asymmetry is the whole strategy.
- Head. The resistance the pump works against: pipe diameter, elbows, filter size and how dirty the filter is. Narrow plumbing and an undersized filter make the pump burn energy fighting friction rather than moving water.
- Pool volume. More gallons means more turnover, though the relationship is gentler than owners expect.
- Attached loads. Solar heating loops, waterfalls, in-floor cleaning systems and salt chlorinators all demand higher flow or longer runtime than filtration alone.
- Season length. A pool closed from October to May uses nothing for seven months.
That last point is the one to be careful with. If your pool is seasonal, do not take an August figure and multiply it by 12. A single-speed pump at $67 a month is $335 across a five-month season, not $807. Equally, in Arizona or Florida, where pumps run year-round and often at higher rates, the annual number is the full one. Annualising an in-season month is the most common error in pool cost estimates, and it runs in both directions depending on where you live.
Whether it is worth doing anything about
Unusually for this site, the answer is an unqualified yes, and the changes are large enough to see on a statement.
Run a variable-speed pump slow and long rather than fast and short. Halving the pump speed uses about one-eighth the energy, so doubling the hours at half speed moves the same volume of water for roughly a quarter of the electricity. Most owners set their new variable-speed pump to a high RPM out of habit and capture a fraction of what it can do. Find the lowest speed that still skims the surface and keeps the chlorinator satisfied, then extend the hours to hit your turnover.
Two supporting changes amplify it. An oversized filter and larger-diameter plumbing both lower the head the pump works against, and lower head means the same flow at lower power. Backwash or clean the filter when the pressure gauge climbs, since a loaded filter raises head continuously.
The replacement arithmetic is straightforward. Moving from a single-speed pump at 364.8 kWh a month to a variable-speed unit at 68.4 kWh saves 296.4 kWh a month, about $54.66 at the average rate. Across a five-month season that is roughly $273; year-round it is roughly $656. Few appliance replacements in a house come close. How it compares with other household loads
At the blended 205.2 kWh a month, a pool pump is roughly a window air conditioner running all summer, at 218.9 kWh, and just below an electric tank water heater at 232.6 kWh. It is about 5.6 times a refrigerator, which runs 36.5 kWh, and nearly four times an electric clothes dryer at 54.7 kWh.
Left as a single-speed unit on an eight-hour schedule, though, it changes category entirely. At 364.8 to 486.4 kWh a month it approaches an electric furnace or heat pump's 532 kWh in heating season, and it does it for a swimming pool rather than for keeping the house warm. Over a full year, exceeding 4,000 kWh puts it above most homes' air conditioning. Very few households would guess that the pump on the equipment pad is competing with the HVAC system.
Converted to a variable-speed unit and run properly at 68.4 kWh a month, it drops to roughly twice a refrigerator, or about the same as a desktop computer left on six hours a day at 27.4 kWh plus a dishwasher and a television. That is the entire argument in one line: the same pool, the same water quality, and the difference between a load that dominates your bill and one that barely registers.
