What a toaster oven actually draws
A toaster oven draws about 1,225 W, and the sources agree closely here for once: DOE's appliance table lists 1,225 W and DTE's chart puts it at 1,277 W. Across the market, expect 1,000 W for a small two-slice unit up to 1,800 W for a large countertop convection model that doubles as an air fryer. Most plug into an ordinary 15-amp circuit, which caps what they can draw.
Like a full-size oven, it does not hold that draw continuously. The element runs flat out during preheat, then a thermostat cycles it on and off to maintain temperature. What differs is the proportions. A wall oven has a large insulated cavity, heavy steel racks and a thick door to bring up to temperature, so preheat takes ten to fifteen minutes and represents a substantial share of a short cooking session. A toaster oven's cavity is tiny — preheat is typically under five minutes, which means nearly all of its running time is productive cooking rather than warm-up.
Toasting is different again: no thermostat cycling at all, just the elements on continuously for two to four minutes, which is why toasting is the one function where the machine draws its full rating throughout.
Typical household use is around 15 minutes a day across toasting, reheating and small bakes. Standby is about 1 W for machines with a digital display, and nothing at all for the mechanical dial-and-spring variety.
What that costs, worked through
Watts × hours ÷ 1,000 = kWh per day. For a toaster oven: 1,225 W × 0.25 hours = 306 watt-hours, or 0.306 kWh a day. Over a 30.4-day month that is 9.3 kWh. At the US average rate of 18.44 cents per kWh, 9.3 × $0.1844 = about $1.72 a month, roughly $20.60 a year, or about six cents a day.
At the ends of the range: a 1,000 W unit at the same usage gives 7.6 kWh a month and about $1.40; an 1,800 W convection model gives 13.7 kWh and about $2.52. The spread is narrow because the machine is small and the hours are few.
Per use, the numbers are almost invisible. Three minutes of toasting at 1,225 W is 0.061 kWh, about one cent. Twenty minutes of baking, including a short preheat, is roughly 0.4 kWh, about seven cents — assuming the element cycles for part of it, so this is a ceiling rather than an exact figure.
Standby, where present, is about 1 W: 0.73 kWh a month, roughly 13 cents, or $1.62 a year. That is about 8 percent of the running cost, which is worth noting but not worth acting on.

What makes the number move
There is not much room for variation in a $1.72-a-month appliance, but the factors that matter are:
- Minutes of use per day. Overwhelmingly the dominant term, and it scales exactly.
- Cavity size. Larger countertop ovens draw more and take longer to preheat, which erodes the advantage they have over a wall oven.
- Function. Toasting runs the elements continuously for a few minutes; baking runs them hard during preheat and then intermittently. Air-fry modes add a fan but are otherwise the same heat.
- Temperature and door seal. A higher setpoint and a poorly sealing door both raise the element's duty cycle, though on these timescales the effect is pennies.
What does not vary is efficiency in the strict sense. Every resistance heating element converts electricity to heat at essentially the same rate; there is no such thing as a more efficient toaster element, and no EnergyGuide label to shop on. Any advantage a toaster oven has comes from the size of the box, not the quality of the element.
Convection is the one genuine exception. Moving air transfers heat to food faster than still air does, so a convection toaster oven can cook at a lower setting or in less time, which reduces total element runtime slightly.
Whether it is worth doing anything about
The toaster oven does not need optimising. It needs using.
Use it in place of the wall oven for anything that fits. The saving is real, but it is worth being precise about where it comes from: the element is no more efficient, and a watt is a watt. The advantage is that you are heating roughly one-tenth the air volume and metal mass. A wall oven spends a substantial part of every short session bringing its own cavity, racks and door up to temperature, and all of that heat is wasted the moment you switch it off. A toaster oven barely has a cavity to heat.
There is a second benefit that does not appear in the appliance's own figures. A wall oven dumps a large amount of waste heat into the kitchen, and in summer your air conditioner then pays to remove it. A toaster oven produces far less of that, so the effective saving in a cooled house in August is larger than the electricity comparison alone suggests.
What is not worth doing: unplugging it to save the 1 W standby, at $1.62 a year; agonising over preheat, which is under five minutes anyway; or buying a new one for efficiency reasons, since there is no efficiency rating to improve on. Buy the size you will actually use, because an oversized countertop oven gives back much of the advantage.
Honest summary: this appliance costs about as much to run as a couple of coffees a year. Its value is as a substitute, not as a target for savings.

The comparison people actually want is with the full-size oven, and the honest version has a caveat. The monthly figures — 9.3 kWh against 24.1 kWh — reflect different amounts of use, not the same meal cooked two ways. The like-for-like point is the rating and the mass: 1,225 W against 2,400 W, a preheat under five minutes against ten to fifteen, and a fraction of the metal and air to bring up to temperature. For a tray of vegetables or four pieces of toast, the small oven wins clearly. For a Thanksgiving turkey it is not in the running.
Against a whole bill, divide 9.3 into your statement's total kWh and expect a number under 1 percent in most homes. This is not where a high bill comes from.
